A smithy is the workshop where a works — a building with a fire, a heavy iron block to hammer on, and tools for shaping hot metal. Horseshoes, nails, gates and farm tools were made and there. In most of the English-speaking world this belongs to the past, so you meet the word in history books, poems and stories about village life rather than in the news; a village once had a smithy the way it had a church and a mill. Some smithies still exist today for horses and for art metalwork. Note the difference between the three similar words: a smith is the person, a smithy is the place, and forge can mean either the place or the fire inside it. The plural is smithies. Say the -th- soft, as in 'with'.

組成From Old Norse smiðja, 'a smith's workshop', which came into English through the Vikings. The root is the same one behind 'smith'.
