Smishing is a crime done by text message. Someone sends you a message that looks real — it seems to come from your bank, a delivery company, the tax office, the police — and it asks you to click a link or reply with private information: your account number, your password, your ID number, a code you just received. The goal is to get your money or take over your account. Smishing is the text-message version of phishing, which is the same trick by email; there is also vishing, done by phone call. The word is used in news reports, bank warnings and by police, and ordinary people are meeting it more and more. You will see it as a noun ('a smishing attack', 'victims of smishing') and sometimes as a verb ('he was smished').
