Smashing means very good, excellent, lovely. It is British and Irish, warm and cheerful, and slightly old-fashioned — you hear it from older speakers, in programmes, on the radio. It can describe almost anything nice: a smashing meal, a smashing day out, a smashing bloke. It is also a common one-word reply meaning 'great!' — 'I'll be there at seven.' 'Smashing.' It is informal but perfectly polite; it will never offend anyone. Americans understand it but rarely say it, and to them it can sound British. Where does the 'good' meaning come from? Probably from smash in smash hit — a huge success — which is why something smashing feels like a hit rather than a . There is a popular story that it comes from Irish 'is maith sin' ('that is good'), because the sounds are close, but dictionary scholars think that is unlikely. It is a nice story; just don't teach it as fact. And of course smashing is also the plain -ing form of the verb: 'he was smashing the plates.'
