This is a very offensive insult aimed at a woman, saying she has sex with many different men. I am explaining it because you will meet it — in films, in songs, in online arguments — and you need to recognise it, not because you should ever say it. It is one of the ugliest words in English for a reason that is worth seeing clearly: there is no equal word for a man. A man with many partners gets called a player, which people half admire. The same behaviour in a woman gets this word, which is meant to shame her. That gap is the whole meaning of the word, and it is why it hurts so much. In real use it is thrown around far beyond its dictionary meaning — at a woman wearing a short skirt, at a girl a boy is angry with, at someone who did nothing at all. It is used as a weapon, not as a description. Two things you may also meet. Some women use it back at each other as a joke between close friends, the way friends trade insults; this only works inside real friendship, and never from a stranger, and never from a man. And there is 'slut-shaming' — a normal, serious phrase used in news and academic writing for the practice of attacking women in this way. That phrase you can safely use. The word itself, never. Its history is interesting and sad: 600 years ago it just meant an , dirty person, man or woman, and over the centuries it narrowed to women and to sex.
