Slovenly describes a person, a room, or a piece of work that is and careless. Clothes not cared for, hair not brushed, a job done in a messy rush — that is the picture. It can be an adjective (“slovenly clothes”) or an adverb (“dressed slovenly”), though the adjective is what meet most. It is a critic’s word: it judges. Friends might say messy or instead. Dictionaries often add “lazy,” and people who are slovenly often cannot be bothered — though actually the heart of it is not idleness but a lack of care. is the word for not wanting to move or try.
