Slovenliness is the state of being slovenly: messy, untidy, and careless about how you look or how you do a job. It is a noun, and a slightly old, judging word. It points to clothes left wrinkled, a room left dirty, work done in a slapdash way — not taking care. Dictionaries sometimes fold “lazy” into it, and there is a grain of truth: the person often cannot be bothered. Though actually, the centre of the word is mess and carelessness, not sitting still. That other idea — idle, not wanting to move — is slothfulness, a different family. You will meet slovenliness in writing more than in speech; in talk, people say messiness, or just “he’s so untidy.” It has no link to Slovenia or Slovenian. Those only look nearby.
