To slither is to slide over a surface with a twisting, side-to-side movement, the way a snake moves, or the way something long and loose goes when it gets away from you. A snake slithers through grass. A person who has fallen on mud might slither down the bank, body turning as they go. Spaghetti can slither off a fork; a wet bar of soap can slither out of your hands. The word keeps a picture of bending and wriggling, not a straight, clean slide. You slide down a slide in a playground in one line; you slither when the movement has that snake-like twist. Writers use it for things they find a bit creepy or hard to hold: fog can slither over a field, a can slither through a school, though those are stretched uses. The core is physical. It is a little more vivid and a little less neutral than slide. Parents use it with children (“Don’t let that worm slither away”), and so do nature programmes. As a noun, a slither is less common; people mostly meet the verb. There is no shame in mixing it up with slide at first — they are old relatives — but slither is the one with the wriggle in it.
組成From Middle English slitheren, a changed form of slideren “to slither, creep,” from Old English slidrian “to slip, slide, slither.” That is slide plus the old ending -er, which marked a repeated action: sliding again and again. Related to Dutch slidderen and German schlittern. The deep root is the same “slip/slide” family as slide.
