One way to hold this word: slim is a shape, and the -ing form is that shape being worked towards. From there the word splits along a simple line — whether the narrower shape is real or only what the eye sees. Eating less and moving more is the first; a dark jacket is the second. Same word, and the sentence tells you which side you are on.
