A sledgehammer is a very large, heavy hammer with a long handle, used to break rock or concrete, or to knock in big posts. You swing it with two hands; it is not the small hammer you hang a picture with. People also stretch the word: a “sledgehammer approach” means using far too much force for a small problem. Though actually, that picture is very common in writing — perhaps more common than the tool itself in city life. There is a verb too: to sledgehammer something is to hit it with one, or to treat a small job with huge force. The sledge here is an old name for this heavy hammer, not a sled on snow.
