To slam-dunk is to score in basketball by jumping up and pushing the ball down through the hoop with force. You are above the basket, not throwing from far away. It looks powerful, and crowds love it. The word is also used as a noun: a slam dunk is that kind of shot. Though actually, in everyday American English people stretch it a long way from sport: they call an easy, almost-certain success a slam dunk — a job you are sure to get, a test you cannot fail. That second use is very common, maybe even more common than talking about the real jump. It is informal. Not every player can do a real slam-dunk: you need height or a big jump. A shot from the floor, even a beautiful one, is not a slam-dunk.
