A skycap is someone at an airport whose job is to carry passengers' bags — from the car to the check-in desk, or off the belt and out to the taxi. The word is mainly American. The 'cap' comes from the cap these porters used to wear, and 'sky' points to the air, meaning the airport. The job title was modelled on the older railroad porter called a redcap, who wore a red hat at train stations. Though actually you hear skycap less than you used to, because so many travellers now pull their own wheeled cases. It names the worker, not a hat, and it is a fairly plain job word, not slang and not formal legal language.
