Signification is the meaning a word is meant to carry — the idea it is supposed to stand for. It is a heavy, school-and-books word. In class you will hear meaning a hundred times before you hear this. People who study language, and older writers, still use it. Though actually, it is not a perfect twin of every use of meaning. Signification leans toward the intended sense, what the word is there to point to, not the extra feeling or the gossip around it. In ordinary talk, just say meaning.
