A signet is a small metal stamp used to press a pattern into hot wax, as an official seal. The wax mark said, in effect, “this really comes from me.” Kings, nobles, and offices used them on letters and papers. Very often the stamp sat in a ring — a signet ring — so the owner carried the seal on their hand. You will meet the word in history, museums, and stories more than in daily life. Though actually, people still wear signet rings as jewellery even when they never touch wax. The ring kept the name; the job of letters mostly went away.
