Sidelong is mainly about a look. You do not turn your face towards the person. You keep your head still, or almost still, and you move your eyes to the side. The look is not open and friendly. It can feel secret, as if you do not want to be caught watching. It can also feel cold or cross — the look you give when you do not quite believe someone, or you do not approve. People mostly put it with glance or look: a sidelong glance, a sidelong look. You can use it as an adverb too: she glanced sidelong. It is a little . In casual talk, younger people may just say side-eye. Though actually, sidelong is quieter than that — less internet slang, more a small movement in a room. You will also meet it for other sideways things (a sidelong approach), but the home of the word is still that look from the corner of the eye.

組成Built from side plus an old little ending -lyng / -le that meant “keep doing it.” People later heard it as side + long, which is why it looks that way now. It is not the long that means “lasting a long time.”
