    A sidearm is a weapon you wear at your side, ready but not in your hands — a pistol in a case on the hip, or, in older times, a sword. Police and soldiers use the word for the gun they carry every day, as opposed to a long gun they pick up for a job. It is a fairly formal, slightly military word; in ordinary talk people just say gun or pistol. Though actually, you will also meet sidearm in baseball: there it means throwing with the arm coming round from the side, not over the top of the head. That is the same spelling, another job.
