    A side-wheeler is an old kind of . Instead of a screw under the water at the back, it has a huge wheel on each side, with boards around the rim. The engine turns the wheels, the boards slap the water, and the ship moves. You saw them a lot on rivers in the 1800s, because the wheels sit high and the boat does not need deep water. A ship with the wheel at the back is a stern-wheeler — same idea, different place. Almost nobody builds them for real work now. They belong to history, films, and tourist boats that want the old look.
