Siberia is a huge part of Russia in Asia. It runs from the Ural Mountains in the west all the way to the Pacific Ocean in the east. There are forests, rivers, oil, gas and other minerals, and not many people for the size of the land. Winters can be terribly cold; that is the picture most have. In Russian history the state sent criminals there, and in Soviet times people who spoke against the government were often sent to prison camps in that vast, frozen country. From that history, English also stretches the name: a distant, unwanted place you are “sent” to, even at work — they moved him to the Siberia of the department. Siberia is not a country of its own; it belongs to Russia.
組成Taken into English in the 1500s, probably through Latin Sibēria, from Russian Сиби́рь (Sibírʹ) + -ia. The name began as a Tatar name for a 14th-century fortress at Qashliq (Tobolsk), capital of the 16th-century Khanate of Sibir. In 16th-century Russian it spread to what is now Tyumen Oblast, and with Russia’s conquest, by the 1800s, to the larger Asian lands beyond the Ob River. The stretched English sense of a far, unwanted place is from the 1800s (the OED has it from 1841).
