A shut-in is someone who is ill or whose body will not let them leave the house easily. They are not staying in for fun. Neighbours might bring food to a shut-in; a nurse might visit. It can also be used as a description: a shut-in life, a shut-in winter. Though actually, people now sometimes stretch it to anyone who almost never goes out — a very private person, someone who lives on a screen — and that stretch can sound , as if choosing to stay home were the same as being trapped by illness. The older, kinder meaning is about not being able to go out. That is the one to learn first.
shut-in 指因病或身體不便而很難出門的人。他們不是為了好玩才待在家；鄰居可能會送食物過去，護士也可能來探望。這個字也可以當形容詞，像「a shut-in life」（足不出戶的生活）、「a shut-in winter」（困在屋裡的冬天）。
現在有人會把它拉寬，用在幾乎不出門的人身上，像很隱密的人，或整天泡在螢幕裡的人。這樣用可能聽起來不太友善，好像選擇待在家，跟被病痛困住是同一回事。比較舊、也比較溫和的意思，是不能出門，先學這個意思就好。
