You say shucks when you are a little disappointed, but not really angry — more like a small sigh than a complaint. "Ah, shucks, we missed the bus." It is mild and informal, and it sounds American. Though actually, there is another common use, a bit older and a bit like a film character from the countryside: someone praises you and you say "Aw, shucks" as if the praise is too much, instead of a plain "thank you." Same little word, two feelings — a tiny letdown, or shy modesty. It is never a strong word. If you are truly upset, this is not the word you want.
