To short-list someone is to put their name on the small last list — the people still being seriously considered for a job, a prize, or a place. You have not chosen them yet; you have only said they are not out. After a company reads hundreds of applications, they may short-list five people for interviews. Awards do the same: she was short-listed for the prize. Though actually, British English loves this as a verb; American English often says make the short list, or just calls the person a . You will see it written short-list, shortlist, or short list. The noun is the list itself; this sense is the verb — the act of putting someone on it. Being short-listed feels like good news, but it is not the win. Many people are short-listed and still do not get the job.
