1. 1

A shithole is a place you think is filthy, ugly, and horrible to spend time in — a room, a building, a street, a town. It is a very rude swear word. Do not use it. Angry people say it about a messy flat or a run-down neighbourhood. Though actually, when someone calls a place this, they are often looking down on it, and sometimes on the people who live there, not only talking about dirt. That extra meanness is why the word lands so hard. You can understand it in a film. You should not repeat it. If you only mean “dirty and unpleasant,” say dump or a mess.
