This is a very ugly British name for a man who is gay. People who say it want to hurt him and make him feel small. It is not a joke word and it is not “just slang.” It is a weapon. Though actually, even repeating it to show a film line or to be funny can cut someone deeply, because the whole point of the word is shame. Decent people do not use it. If you need to talk about gay men, say gay man or gay — those are normal, respectful words. Do not use this word.
