A shipmate is another sailor who works on the same ship as you. It is not just any friend, and it is not someone who works for the same company on a different ship. You share the work, the food, the small sleeping space, and the danger. Sailors still say it with warmth: “my old shipmate” can mean someone they served with years ago, not only the person standing next to them today. On land people sometimes stretch it to mean a close work partner, though actually that is a little loose — the home of the word is the ship.
