    Shipboard means happening on a ship, while you are at sea. A shipboard romance is a love story that starts on a voyage; shipboard life is the daily routine of sailors or passengers. You can also say on shipboard to mean on the ship. It is a slightly word; many people now just say on board or on the ship. Use it for ships, not for planes or trains — though actually onboard (one word) has spread to planes, while shipboard has stayed with ships.

組成ship + board. Board here is the ship’s side or deck, the same idea as in on board.
