A shilling was an old British coin, used before the UK changed its money system in 1971 — twenty shillings made one pound. You won't see one in a shop today, but the word still shows up in older books, films, and expressions, almost always as a way to talk about a small amount of money from the past ('he didn't have a shilling to his name'). Some other countries, like Kenya and Tanzania, still use 'shilling' as the name of their real, current currency.
