Shelling is when large guns fire explosive shells — heavy metal cases packed with explosive — at a place, often a town or a battlefield. You meet it in news about war: the shelling of a city, a night of shelling. It is a serious news word, not a kitchen word. The 'shell' here is the flying weapon, and shelling is the attack itself. Though actually the same spelling can mean taking peas or nuts out of their shells; that is a different, much quieter meaning, and it is not this one.
