A sheikhdom is a place governed by a sheikh — an Arab prince or chief. Think of a kingdom, but the ruler’s title is sheikh, not king. It can be a whole small state or a territory under that ruler. You will meet the word in history and in news about the Gulf. Though actually, in everyday English now people more often say , as in the United Arab . Sheikhdom is still right; it just sounds a little more textbook or old-fashioned. The idea is the same: land named after the kind of ruler who holds it.
組成From sheikh (the Arab ruler) + -dom, an old English ending that builds a word for “the land or state of someone,” as in kingdom.
