Sheffield is a city in the north of England, in South Yorkshire. For a long time it was famous for steel, tools, and — knives, forks, and spoons. If someone at home has old “Sheffield steel” knives, they are naming this city. Though actually, most of that old heavy industry has now closed, so Sheffield is no longer the steel giant it once was; the name still carries the history. It has two universities and two football clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. It is not London and it is not in the south; it sits among hills. A river called the Sheaf runs there, and that river gave the city its name.
組成From the River Sheaf — Old English scēaþ, “boundary” — plus Old English feld, “field, open land.” So the name is “the open land by the Sheaf,” not “she” plus “field.”
