Sheepskin is the skin of a sheep with the wool still on it — leather on one side, wool on the other. That wool is the point: people make coats, boots, gloves, and rugs from it because it is warm and strong. If the wool has been taken off and the surface is smooth, we are more likely to say sheep leather, not sheepskin, though shops are not always careful with the name. You will see real sheepskin on winter coats and on those small rugs people put on a chair or the floor. Though actually, in older American talk a “sheepskin” can also mean a diploma, because important papers were once written on animal skin; that is a side joke, not the first meaning.
