A sharpener is a tool that makes something sharp again. The one students know first is the pencil sharpener: you put the pencil in and turn, or you press it in, and wood and lead come off in until the point is fine. There are also sharpeners for knives, scissors, and workshop tools — little , stones, or machines that put the edge back.
The word is just sharpen + -er: the thing that sharpens. In a classroom, 'pass the sharpener' almost always means the pencil one. In a kitchen, it is the knife one. English does not always add 'pencil' or 'knife'; you know from the room you are in.
