If you have a shareholding in a business, you own some of its shares — a piece of the company. The word names that holding: a 10 percent shareholding means you own a tenth of the shares. Newspapers and company reports use it. It is not the person (that person is a shareholder). Though actually, people stretch it a little: “shareholding” can just mean “owning shares” as an idea, not a counted stake. In everyday talk, “I own shares in that company” is simpler.
