A holding is something you own and keep — most often land, or a piece of a company (shares). If a family has land holdings, they own fields or buildings. If a person has holdings in a company, they own some of that company. The word feels a bit official and money-ish; you hear it in news about business, farms, and rich families, less in chat about a phone or a bike you own. You often meet it in the plural, holdings, when the meaning is property. There is a close business use too: a holding company is a company whose main job is to own other companies, not to sell bread or phones itself. The noun is simply hold + -ing: what you hold, in the sense of own. The set phrase holding company later travelled widely; Russian even has холдинг (xolding), a made-up-looking English word from that phrase. Do not mix this noun up with the ordinary verb form. She is holding the baby is just hold happening now. That is not this word’s job.
