A shantytown is a very poor area in or beside a city where people have built their own small homes from whatever they can find — thin wood, tin sheets, cardboard, plastic. The houses are not planned by the city; they go up fast and sit close together, often without safe water or strong walls. News writers and aid workers use this word. Though actually, it is not quite the same as slum. A slum can be old brick buildings in bad repair. A shantytown is the camp of rough huts. People also write shanty town as two words; it means the same thing.
