In the Jewish religion, Shabbat is the holy day of rest. People often gloss it as Saturday, but that is only half the picture. It starts on Friday evening when the sun goes down, and it ends on Saturday evening — sunset to sunset, not midnight to midnight. On Shabbat many Jewish people do not work, and some also set driving, cooking, or certain machines aside. They pray, light candles, eat a special meal, and spend time with family. The Hebrew word is about rest. You will also meet Sabbath, which is the same old rest-word in another English shape. Christians often use Sabbath for Sunday; Jewish people use Shabbat for this Friday-night-to-Saturday rest. If a classmate only remembers Saturday off, that is the skeleton. The living thing is a holy rest that begins when Friday's light goes.
