The Seychelles is a country of about 85 small islands in the Indian Ocean, east of Kenya and north of Madagascar. People know it for pale beaches, very clear water, and plants and animals you do not see in many other places — giant tortoises, for example. It is also a place many rich travellers visit, so in the news it often sounds like a holiday dream, though of course people live and work there too. The capital is Victoria. About 90,846 people lived there in 2014, so it is a small country. English, French, and Seychellois Creole are used. We say the Seychelles (with the), like the Netherlands. A person from there is Seychellois, not “a Seychelle.”
