A sexton is a person whose job is to look after a church building and the ground around it. The work can include unlocking the church, keeping it clean, digging graves in the , and ringing the bells. A sexton is not a priest; they are staff who care for the place. The word feels a little old, and you will meet it more in British English, church talk, history, and older novels than in everyday conversation. In some towns the same job is now called caretaker or . Though actually, in some places sexton still mainly means the person who looks after the graves, and in others it is the whole building. It comes from an old French word for the person who kept the sacred things, and it is the same older word that also became English — two shapes, one source. It has nothing to do with sex, , or a .
組成From Old French segrestien, from Medieval Latin sacristanus, built on Latin sacer (“sacred, holy”). The same source also gave English sacristan — two later shapes of one older word.
