    A serviette is a napkin: the square of cloth or paper you put on your lap or wipe your mouth with at a meal. You will hear it in Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In the United States almost everyone says napkin, and serviette can sound foreign or a bit old-fashioned. Though actually, even in Britain it is a slightly loaded word: some people feel napkin is the plain, 'proper' choice and serviette sounds as if you are trying to be polite. It is still just the thing by your plate — not a bathroom hand towel, and not a baby's . Formality sits in the middle; it is ordinary table talk, not a technical word.
