- 1
A serviceman is a man who belongs to the armed forces — army, navy, air force, and the like. People say it of someone in uniform, or of a veteran, in news and everyday talk. It is a little older in feel than service member, which many speakers now use when they do not want to mark gender. Though actually, in American English some people also call a repair man a serviceman (the TV serviceman); that is a different job. The meaning here is military.
