Server-side talks about the work a program does on a server — a computer that sits somewhere else and answers many users — not on the phone or laptop in your hand. When a website checks your password, that check often happens server-side, so the secret does not live only on your machine. The pair word is client-side: that is the code running in your browser or app. Programmers use this pair all day; it is technical but not fancy. Though actually, the server here is not a waiter. It is the machine that serves data. And side does not mean left or right; it means on that end of the connection.
