A seraph is one of the angels that, in the Bible, stand closest to God and guard his seat. In the famous picture in Isaiah they have six wings. This is church-and-literature English, not cafe English; most daily speakers would just say angel. The English singular seraph was cut back from the plural seraphim, which English took from Latin seraphim, and Latin from Biblical Hebrew שְׂרָפִים (sərāp̄īm), the plural of שָׂרָף (sārāp̄). The King James Bible even a double plural, seraphims. The Oxford English Dictionary says the singular seraph may have begun with John Milton, in Paradise Lost (1667).
組成Back-formation: English built a singular seraph from the plural seraphim. That plural came from Latin seraphim, from Biblical Hebrew שְׂרָפִים (sərāp̄īm), plural of שָׂרָף (sārāp̄).
