In the Christian year, Septuagesima is the third Sunday before Lent — an old doorway into the weeks that lead toward Easter. The Latin name means “the seventieth day.” It is a round church number, counted in a traditional way toward Easter, not a homework sum you should try to make exact. In the old Western calendar it opened a short season before Lent; the next Sundays had matching Latin names. You will find Septuagesima in older Anglican and Catholic books, in hymns, and in church history. Many churches dropped these names in the late twentieth century, so a lot of living Christians have never heard it. It is not a person, and it is not anyone's seventieth birthday.
