You will also hear sentient as a noun, “a sentient,” meaning a being that can feel — usually in fiction or philosophy, not in everyday chat. In ethics, calling animals sentient is a way of saying their pain counts. It is a serious, rather formal adjective, not a medical everyday word like “awake.”
