    Senegal is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic coast. Its capital is , a busy port city. In 2014 the population was given as about 13.3 million; the number is higher now, as numbers of people always move. French is widely used in government and school because of the colonial past, but many languages are spoken, including Wolof. On a map it wraps around The , a thin country along a river. People say Senegal for the place; they say for the people and for things from there. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter.

組成The name probably comes from a Portuguese spelling of Zenaga, a people of that coast — and that name may go back to Arabic and Persian words for ‘the land of Black people’. Another idea mixes the Serer high god Rog Sene with o gal, ‘a body of water’, in the Serer language. Scholars do not all agree, so treat this as a probable story, not a settled one.
