From the word’s history

From Latin senator 'member of the senate', from senex 'old man, old' (PIE root *sen- 'old'). The Roman senate was literally a 'council of elders', so a senator was first one of the senior, more experienced men trusted to decide public matters.

來自拉丁文 senator（參議院成員），源自 senex（老人、年長的）。羅馬的參議院原本就是「長者議事會」，所以 senator 最早指的是那些較年長、較有經驗、被託付來決定公共事務的人。
