    A semi- is a person or a team that plays in a semi-final. They have already come a long way. They are in the last four. Winning the semi-final makes them a . Losing it still leaves them a semi- — that is how far they got. News, sports pages, and contest shows use it. You can be a semi- in football, tennis, a singing contest, or a quiz. It names the round, not a prize for coming “almost first.” Though actually, you do not wait until after the match to use the word. You are a semi- as soon as you have a place in that round, including if you then lose.
