A finalist is a person or a team that has already won enough rounds to reach the last game or last round of a competition. They are still in it; they have not won the whole thing yet. One event can have two finalists, or more, depending on how the last stage is set up. You will hear it in sport, in music contests, in school competitions, in prize lists. It names a place in the draw, not a personality: you can be a quiet finalist. After the last match, newspapers still call someone a former finalist, meaning they got that far.
