If you act selflessly, you do something in a selfless way — other people first, you second. It is an adverb of praise, the form that goes with selfless. You will hear it in thank-you speeches, news about , and stories: she selflessly stayed behind. It is a little more formal than everyday chat; with friends you might just say she didn't think of herself. Though actually the word can sound a bit too big if you use it for a small thing, like passing the salt. Save it for when someone really gives something up.
