A selfless person cares about other people more than about themselves. The word is praise. We use it for parents who give up sleep, for a friend who gives you the last ticket, for a nurse on a long night. Teachers and speeches like it; it feels warm and a little high, though you can still say it at the dinner table. The picture in the word is 'without self' — you put your own wants down. Though actually nobody is selfless every hour of the day; we use it when, in that moment or in that life, the other person comes first. Do not mix it up with selfish. They share the letters s-e-l-f, and students often read too fast and grab the wrong one. Selfish is the ; selfless is the smile.
