A self-winding watch is one you do not have to wind by hand to make it keep time. Older mechanical watches had a small ; you turned it every day to store energy in a spring inside. A self-winding watch has a weight that moves when your wrist moves, so the spring winds as you wear it. You hear the word in watch shops and among people who collect watches. People also say automatic watch, which is the more common everyday name. Though actually, if you leave a self-winding watch in a drawer for weeks, it will still stop — it needs movement, or a box that shakes it. It is an adjective, almost always in front of watch.
