If you are self-taught, you learned a skill or a subject by yourself — by reading, watching, and — not by sitting in a school class with a teacher. People say it about musicians, painters, cooks, and people who learned computers at home: "He is a self-taught guitarist." It is an adjective, and it is usually respectful; it can even sound like praise, because the learning took effort. Though actually, almost nobody learns in a total vacuum. A self-taught person still uses books, videos, and other people's work — they just did not follow a formal course. Taught is the past form of teach, so the idea is "taught by yourself".
Self-taught 指一個人靠自己學會某項技能或學科，例如看書、看影片、動手練習，而不是在學校跟著老師上課。這個詞通常帶著尊敬，甚至有讚美的意味，因為自學需要很大的努力。句型是 「a self-taught ＿＿」，例如 「He is a self-taught guitarist.」（他是自學的吉他手。）
不過，幾乎沒有人是完全憑空學會的，自學的人還是會用書、影片和別人的作品，只是沒有參加正式的課程。字裡的 taught 是 teach 的過去分詞，整個字的意思是「被自己教會的」。
